Warming Up for the Big Dance
The
2019-2020 men’s college basketball regular-season is nearly a closed book but
the conference tournaments are looming and will be the first chapter written in
the postseason before the national tournament is held. Therefore, there are
still games to be played before Selection Sunday but the No. 1 seeds are coming
into focus with only the blur of what will be their conference tournament
performances obstructing the view.
Let’s review
a few of the teams to watch, as well as their corresponding odds, which can be
found at all of the best
sportsbooks by SBR. March Madness will be here before you know it so if you’re
not a college hoops freak, and want to be able to talk about it like you are,
then read on and discover which teams are poised to make a deep run to the
national championship!
Potential
No. 1 Seeds
Kansas
(26-3, +550) – The
Jayhawks are definitely tournament bound and unless the roof caves in will
likely secure one of the four No. 1 seeds. Kansas is reigning supreme in one of
the toughest college basketball conferences in the nation, the Big 12, but has a talented Baylor squad breathing down their
necks with an identical overall record and just a half-game back in the
conference standings. It’s likely the Big 12 will be represented by two top
seeds and a clash between these teams in the conference tournament finals is
likely before the Big Dance begins.
Gonzaga
(29-2, +800) – These
Bulldogs have plenty of bite to go along with their bark as evidenced by their
29-2 record while boasting the nation’s top-ranked offense, currently averaging
87. 7 points per game. Although the caliber of competition in their conference
is a distant second compared to others, the Zags have defeated out of
conference foes like Oregon and Arizona to name a few. If Gonzaga can buckle
down a bit more on defense, they could find themselves in the Final Four and
perhaps secure a national title that has eluded them to this point.
Baylor
(26-3, +850) – The
Bears split the season series with their conference rivals from Kansas but the
old saying, “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” comes into play here
because the second of those two-season series games was a loss for Baylor which
gave them two conference setbacks versus only one for the Jayhawks.
Nevertheless, there’s a very good chance the Bears will get to even the score
in the Big 12 Tournament with the winner virtually guaranteed to be sitting
atop their region when the seedings are announced.
Dayton
(27-2, +950) – The Dayton
Flyers
resemble The Little Engine That Could, with a pristine 16-0 conference record
and giving the best team in the nation, Kansas, all they could handle earlier
in the season when they bowed to the Jayhawks, 90-84, in an overtime thriller.
However, the Flyers have no room for faltering as they reside in the Atlantic
10, not exactly a bastion of college basketball championships, and if they
stumble in their conference tournament then you could see these Flyers falling
from their lofty perch.
San Diego
State (28-1, +1800) – The Aztecs fall into the same category as Dayton, small conference school
playing bigtime basketball, but one misstep and they can kiss a No. 1 seed
goodbye. San Diego State has yet to meet any of the college basketball elites
but they boast the third-ranked defense in the nation, allowing just 59.2
points per game. If the others above them stumble and the Aztecs cruise to a
Mountain West Tournament title then they could be another small conference
school holding serious sway with the Selection Committee.
