NCAA
Football Futures - College Football Championship
The
kickoff to the College Football season is right around the corner, so the final
bell is about to ring for preseason futures. NCAA football futures will be
available all season, but you probably won’t find value like you can now. The
past three College Football
Championships
featured a total of three teams. Can another team break through and knock off
the mighty Tide or will Nick Saban rule the college world again this year?
Let’s take a look at the NCAA Futures for the College Football Championship.

Before
we get into the odds for teams to win the Championship this year, let’s take a
quick look at the Preseason 2018 College Football Rankings. These are
important, because history tells us the teams atop this list at the start of
the year have a very good chance of playing meaning football in December. Here is
the Top 10:
1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Georgia
4. Wisconsin
5. Ohio State
6. Washington
7. Oklahoma
8. Miami
9. Auburn
10. Penn State
It
shouldn’t come as any surprise that the top of the favorites list at online sportsbooks looks very similar.
In fact, the top three mirror each other, with Alabama (+165), Clemson (+250)
and Georgia (+800) 1, 2 and 3, followed by Ohio State (+850), Washington (+950)
and Wisconsin (+2000).
Alabama
+165
The
Alabama Crimson Tide have appeared in all of the last three Championship games,
winning two and losing one. Down 13-0 at the half in the Championship game this
past January, Nick Saban made a shrewd move, benching their yearlong starting
quarterback Jalen Hurts in favor of Tua Tagovailoa. The move proved to serve
the Tide faithful very well, with the Tide going on to win 26-23 in overtime
over Georgia.
There
is a really good chance the Crimson Tide get back to the Championship game this
season. Not only is Saban known for his coaching, but he is also a recruiting
genius, and surely has his team stacked again this year. My problem is at +165,
they don’t offer a lot of value.
Georgia
+800
A
good buddy of mine is from Atlanta and is a Georgia Boy through and through.
Maybe I’m drinking his homer kool-aid, but with the top recruiting class of
2018, following a 13-win season where they were “this close” to a national
championship, this could be the Bulldogs’ year.

A
four game stretch mid-October has three of four games against LSU, Florida and
Auburn. If Georgia is undefeated heading into their November 17th
game against UMass, they will run the table and unanimously be voted into the
College Football Playoffs. Once there, if Kirby Smart utilizes all the talent
around him correctly, I like them at +800.
Ohio
State +850
With
what’s going on with Urban Meyer, depending on what the real story is and how
it is effecting the locker-room, this could be a curse or a blessing for this
squad. At +850 they represent some pretty good value for a team that had the 2nd
best recruiting class in 2018, including three 5-star players.
With
a 14-win season in 2014, and 11 or more wins in every season since Meyer was
hired as the head coach in 2012, the pedigree is evident that this guy knows
how to win football games. For me, the questions surrounding Urban Meyers’
suspension are too much to handle.
Notre
Dame +3500
A
favorite of many, the Fighting Irish don’t look to be much of a factor in the
College Football Playoffs this season. However, they did sneak their way into
the Top 10 recruiting class for 2018 with 14 4-star players.
The
Irish went 10-3 in two of the last 3 years, sandwiched by a terrible 4-8 season
in 2016. 9 or 10 wins isn’t out of the question, but the Notre Dame Fighting
Irish would need a divine intervention to win the College Football Championship
this season, but if you’re a value seeker, at +3500, the Irish may have some.
UCLA
+12500
Although
UCLA has the second toughest schedule on the FBS this season (Michigan is #1), Chip
Kelly comes to UCLA with a massive chip on his shoulder (pardon the pun). With
8, 4 and 6 wins the past three years respectively, it would be a miracle for
Kelly to get this team double-digit wins and into consideration for the
playoffs, but there is a chance.
After
a long look at the 2018 NCAAF futures
odds for College Football Championship, the Bruins were among the only teams I
spotted that are offering major return on investment for a team with a big name
and coach. After looking at their schedule, having to face four teams that are
inside the Top 15 of the Preseason 2018 College Football Rankings (Oklahoma
(7), Washington (6), USC (15) and Stanford (13)), chances are Chip Kelly will
have to wait until next year to get a shot at showing be belongs among the list
of top coaches in college ball.
