SERVPRO First Responder Bowl
Boston College vs. Boise State
1:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
Cotton Bowl Dallas
This years Cotton Bowl features two very different
teams that have taken very different paths to get here. This one is interesting
for one reason; the Boise State Broncos have been a nationally ranked team for
a long time now, really, since the 2006/07 years when Chris Petersen took over
as head coach and built them into perennial winners and led them to an unlikely
Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma in 2007. The problem that has always hounded the
Broncos is strength of schedule. The Broncos have their fans and they get a lot
of credit on the Top 25. The Top 25 pays no attention to the critics-the
naysayers. The critics have always said a team such as the Broncos can’t win
over well established football programs.
The Broncos have beaten Oregon, they have beaten
Oklahoma and a few others but have never beaten a team from the east or south
or from the north or Midwest, other than Oklahoma in 2007. Can they beat a Big
10, big 12, Big East, ACC or SEC team? This is and has always been the question
for the Broncos. They played the Oklahoma State Cowboys this season and were
drilled, 44-21 but went on to end the season at 11-3, with their 2 other losses
coming by way of San Diego State, 19-13 and #25 Fresno in the MW title game,
19-16.

Since 2007, the naysayers have always maintained that
the BSU Broncos could not and will not beat a “real” football school. Now,
Boise State has the chance to do just that and shut their critics up once and
for all.
We are not saying that 7-5, Boston College is some
powerhouse of college football, this team has had it’s ups and down this season
and were previously ranked. They have had some great wins and some extremely
tough losses and ended the season on a three game losing streak, but take a
look to who… #2 Clemson 27-7, Florida State 22-21, #20 Syracuse, 42-21. They have
beaten Virginia Tech 31-21, Miami 27-14, but lost early on to Purdue 30-13.
Undoubtably, the Boston college Eagles have the tougher schedule, this cannot
be argued.

Boise State has played Troy, UCONN, Wyoming, SDSU,
Nevada, CSU, AFA, BYU, #25 Fresno, UNM, #21 USU and Fresno in the title game.
Look, every schedule in college football is tough for somebody but the reality
is this, Boise State plays a whole bunch of nobody’s. For the entire schedule,
they played 3 ranked teams, Oklahoma State, Fresno and Southern Utah. None of
those ranked teams are any kind of traditional football powerhouse and Oklahoma
State ended the season unranked.

Consensus
Don’t forget, this game must be played! No matter what
conference a team plays for or what side of the country they may be from, they
have to play the game and numbers don’t lie. BSU has a better quarterback in
Brett Rypien with 3705 yards passing, 30 TD’s, and 7 INT’s vs Anthony Brown for
BC with 2121 yards, 20 TD’s and 9 INT’s. The running back battle absolutely
goes to BSU with Alexander Mattison who has amassed 302 attempts for 1415 yards
and 17 TD’s vs AJ Dillon for BC with 227 attempts for 1108 yards and 10 TD’s.
The strength of Boston college from an offensive perspective is simply not
there against BSU. And Defensively… the Broncos are allowing 22.1 ppg, the
Eagles, 25.7. The Eagles are allowing 247.9 passing yards while the Broncos are
allowing 233, the Eagles are allowing 148.3 yards on the ground to the Broncos
122.9. As you can see, the Broncos are slightly winning every stat.

In out humble opinion, this game comes down to
strength of schedule. What kind of year would QB Anthony Brown have had if he
was playing for the Broncos? What about Rypien for the Eagles? This game will
be close, it will be tight from the opening kickoff to the final seconds but
the edge must go to the Eagles, a very slight edge indeed.
Thursday, Dec. 27
New Era Pinstripe Bowl
Miami vs. Wisconsin
5:15 p.m. ET, ESPN
Yankee Stadium New York
This game has all the earmarks of a defensive battle
and although both teams have been disappointing in comparison to the last
couple of seasons, they are both very good football teams. Look for a defensive
effort from start to finish and look for Miami to get the better of Alex
Hornibrook. The numbers stack up as close as it gets but in the end, Miami has
the better defense and have allowed just 18.2 ppg against the Badgers 24.3.
This one will be fun and extremely entertaining and Miami takes this.
